FEDICAMP

Federation for the Full Development of Peasant Men and Women of Nicaragua

Dedicated to sustainable food production, maintaining biodiversity and creating social progress

What We Do:

Provide water collections systems, fuel efficient stoves, solar energy panels, natural horticulture methods and supplies, and the re-forestation of clear cut regions.

The land pictured above supports a community of 1,180 people with 300 adobe dwellings and 4 water pumps. On this day the community is planting seedling trees provided by FEDICAMP that in following years will provide cooking and building materials as well as a food source thereby enabling the protection of the remaining Nicaraguan rainforests.  FEDICAMP’s reforestation program plants a variety of trees to address regional challenges--soil erosion, fuel and building materials, and food source trees such as mango, banana, avocado and plantain.

A FEDICAMP co-ordinator working with a small farmer sharing his expertise and guidance in natural horticulture methods. On this farm a small cement container was built to hold a pool of water with small fish used as fertilizer. Hot chili peppers are crushed into powder and sprinkled over mature squash plants as a very effective pesticide.

Over one million people in Nicaragua are without access to water.  Only a few regions have municipal water systems leaving very large populations without a water source. Responding to this need, FEDICAMP builds water cisterns catching rainwater from rooftops and storing it below ground (eliminating evaporation) which can then

be pumped to the surface.

For larger communities,

FEDICAMP builds wells,

like the one above, which can supply sufficient water for cooking and cleaning, as well as crop irrigation.
